The submission of problems and studies for WCCI, 2022-2024, has come to an end.
I have several questions regarding the conditions of this significant event, in terms of the selection of judges, the Table with the list of participants and the published compositions.

So.

1. Participation of judges in the competition.

It is unacceptable, in my opinion, for a composer who judged the competition to take part in it, no matter what the conditions for his judging are! It is like in mathematics - an axiom that is not subject to discussion and, moreover, proof. Such a practice does not exist in any tournament of any kind of sport, nor in competitions related to art.

After all, it is clear that a judge (whether he wants it or not – it is part of human nature) will overcharge his colleagues participating in the same competition in order to demonstrate the unwritten law of “mutual support”! That is, everything is clear with this.

A legitimate question arises, and who can judge in this case? As an option, we can propose the following solution: let those composers who took prize places in the previous championship judge, but with the condition that they will not take part in the competition! In this case, these judges will not have such motivation in terms of inflating scores.

Second, five judges are clearly excessive. Apparently, the option of choosing such a number of judges was caused by the fact that at least somehow get closer to objective judging? I doubt that a quantitative increase in judges can lead to better judging. In my opinion, three judges are enough, as was written above.

2. Unified System of Evaluating Compositions.

A Unified System of Evaluating Works has not yet been developed. Naturally, it will not be a panacea for all possible mistakes of a judge, as I wrote in previous articles, but at least it can become a good platform for judges and participants of competitions, which can be relied on when evaluating problems and studies. In the meantime, we have to put up with what is and, reluctantly, sometimes tolerate bias, taste preferences and unprofessionalism of individual judges!

3. Table of Lists of Participants (WCCI, 2022-2024)

I believe it is a mistake to publish competition problems and studies of authors in the Table before the deadline for sending compositions. It is more correct to indicate in the Table before the end of sending problems and etudes: participant, section and number of sent compositions without the possibility of viewing them by other composers. Restrictions for viewing the problems and etudes sent by authors should be lifted immediately after the end of the sending period.

I will try to explain why this is done. Imagine a situation. A certain composer sent his problems or etudes to the director of the competition, the latter published them in the Table. In this case, they become available for viewing by all composers. Consequently, composers participating in the same section, but who have not yet sent their works to the director of the competition, have a good opportunity to compare the quality of their works with the problems or etudes of the above-mentioned composer, which gives them a certain advantage in terms of revising their assessments and choosing compositions to send them to the competition!

By the way, some composers most likely used this opportunity in this competition - this was clearly visible in the multi-move section.

4. Published compositions.

In my opinion, the best option for presenting your works to judges, with the ability to animate moves, when clicking on the diagram, a page opens with your composition, and the solutions are presented with animation of moves.

That is, the convenience for viewing and analyzing published problems and studies for judges is obvious. This is especially true for such genres as studies and multi-move games. In this case, there is no need to create pgn files unless they are intended for other purposes.
