Pelle Theme (x5 moves; perhaps shown here for the second time in a threemovers problem) Pacioli/Pelle moves: Rooks: orthogonal and horizontal; Pawns: diagonal, orthogonal and en passant; Queen: diagonal 1.Rd2! [2.Rexe2#] 1...Re3 2.cxd5* [3.Qxa4#] e5 3.dxe6 e.p.# (Pelle Theme) 2...Bxd5+ 3.Bxd5# 2...e6 3.d6, dxe6# 1...f3 2.Bg3 [3.gxf3#] f2/fxg2 3.Rexe2# 1...Rxe1 2.Rd4#
*4 tries by white Queen on the second move (every mate in 3 actually contains a mate in 2, a fact that should be appreciated): 2.Qb5? [3.Qb1#] f3! 2.Qb8? [3.Qb1#] f3 3.Rxe3#; 2...Qb7! 2.Qxa4? [3.Qc2, cxd5#] Qxa8! 2.Qc8? [3.Qf5#] Be6 3.Qxe6#: 2...e6! Author´s note : In this problem Pelle´s theme is perhaps shown for the second time in a threemovers problem. All the moves in thematic variation are made by pinned pieces which continue to be pinned after moving. In my opinion, King´s flight is excusable in this case, because of the complexity of the challenge (a priori this difficult theme was not attainable in a threemovers). Perhaps shown for the first time in my problem published in Pat a Mat 107, March 2019, problem 22. For the attribution of Pelle´s move to Luca Pacioli (c.1445-1517) see my article: «Luca Pacioli, padre del movimiento Pelle». Sinfonie scacchistiche, 131, Gennaio-Marzo, 2018, pp. 217-220.
